Bali
Known variously as The Island of the Gods, Morning of the World or Shangri La, Bali is one of more than 17,000 islands in the Indonesian Archipelago, which runs from Malaysia all the way to Australia. A chain of awesome volcanoes stretches across the island, helping to create an ideal environment for tropical rainforests, cultivated rice fields, mangrove swamps and beaches of both black (volcanic) and white sand, together with some world class surf. The unique local culture is strongly rooted in ancient Hindu tradition rich in art, music and dance. Despite a devastating bomb attack in October 2002, which killed 202 people and hit tourist numbers (and a smaller one in October 2005), the property market has been underpinned by Bali’s unique charms and the ease of access from Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia. Indeed, around a third of those who buy on the island are expats based in south-east Asia, with the remainder mainly Australians and Canadians. It also helps that the price of property is still about a third below that in comparable resorts in Thailand, its main competitor, despite annual prices rises of up to 30%. A typical three-bedroom villa with a large garden and a pool could cost around £200,000, and should be easy to let if it is well located.
